Peace be with you all,
In the Hobbit, there is a scene between Gandalf and Galadriel, in which Gandalf states:
“Saruman believes that it is only great power that can hold evil in check. But that is not what I have found. I’ve found it is the small things, everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keeps the darkness at bay. Simple acts of kindness and love.”
What a powerful message, and one that perfectly reflects the Biblical ideal and message of the Cross. Jesus did not defeat evil or sin with military power or might. Rather, He defeated it by meeting others in their suffering, and choosing to suffer with them. He defeated it by, ironically, giving Himself over to military might and power. In doing that, He was crucified and He died. All the while, healing others, loving others, being kind to others. This is what defeated Satan. This is what defeated evil. This is what defeated sin. This is what defeated the darkness.
And throughout the centuries, the Church has kept confronted such darkness, keeping it at bay, through the acts of this Cross. Through the acts of Christian charity, love, compassion, and kindness.
This is the power of the Cross. Evil, sin, death, and darkness is not defeated by military might or power. It is not defeated by strength. It is not defeated by this or that policy or program. It is defeated when we act in kindness, love, and compassion.
Therefore, be ordinary. Follow the Cross. Act in Love and Compassion. Act through the power of the Cross.
If there is darkness in your life, meet it with the power of Love. In the words of Paul, “ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
