Pastor’s Weekly Update

Peace be with you, my friends.

To be human is to serve others. Whether we like to or not, we are always in service, in one way or another, to the other. In fact, relationships cannot exist without service. No matter the relationship we have with another being, service is involved.

Furthermore, service always involves purpose. There is a reason we “serve.” Depending on the relationship(s) involved, that purpose may be different. But purpose exists nonetheless. For example, when I was a waiter in my early 20s, the primary purpose of my “service” to customers was to make money (both for the restaurant and for myself). Later, when I joined the US Navy, the primary purpose of my “service” was to defend the United States of America from threats at home and from threats abroad. On a more personal note, the primary purpose of my “service” as a parent is to raise my children in a certain way.

As Christians, the Bible calls us to serve God and to serve one another. And just as with all other types of service, there is a reason behind the service. There is a purpose to the service we give God and to the service we give others.
