Peace be with you, my friends.
In the movie “Fireproof,” Caleb Holt (the protagonist) struggles to overcome a pornography addiction. The movie itself is not perfect and there are many flaws to it. However, some of the principles presented in the movie are valid. One such scene deals with Caleb destroying his computer with a baseball bat. He does this because it was his way of trying to remove the temptation of pornography from his life. Like with any addiction, removing the means of the addiction is an important step in the recovery process. Moreover, Caleb does it because his marriage is faltering due to his addiction. This, therefore, is his process and attempt in tearing down a destructive habit in order to make priority what is most important in his life, which is his marriage. The Spiritual Truth and Reality in this scene is that he tore down an idol and made priority his marital covenant.
This is what I like to call a “Gideon moment.” A moment where a person tears down an idol in order to make priority God and the ways of God. You can learn more about the “Gideon moment” concept this upcoming Sunday as I explore the life, being, and actions of Gideon.
